I took both of these pictures at the Roseville Thanksgiving Parade. My goal was to catch some clean, crisp shots as the participants moved past me. I set my camera manually to a high shutter speed to stop the motion and kept my aperture high as well to capture all of the detail. Since it was a sunny day, I had no problem keeping both numbers high.

My mother-in-law always sets a beautiful table. I took this opportuntiy to practice in low lighting and with candles. I laughed when I saw you post Heather ... we were thinking the same way. :) I have a couple of other pictures that I will post later, but this was my favorite. The only thing I don't like about the picture is how grainy it is, but that comes with the high ISO.

Took these last night after coming home from Thanksgiving Eve service. My mom laughed at me. She says I take pictures of the strangest things. She'd never thought to take a picture of the fog (she just moved from Eureka). I thought it sounded like a cool idea :) I set up the tripod on my front porch and used a super long shutter speed. I also used the 10 sec timer so that when I pushed the shutter release I wasn't moving the camera. 10 second timer plus a 5 second shutter speed meant I didn't always time it right and a couple times a car would drive though my shot. I thought it looked pretty cool though. They weren't even driving fast. The stop sign is right there. Might be fun to do this again on a street with no stop sign :) Hope you both had a Happy Thanksgiving!

The turkey is in the oven, the boys are watching football, the girls are playing with Grandma, and I'm on my laptop. Happy Thanksgiving !
I wanted to try my hand at some candlelight portraits this week. I pulled out the tripod, grabbed my fastest lens and went to town.
I had a hard time picking a favorite, so I posted few.

I'm a little late today ... sorry. This CT stuff has me super busy right now. O.k., I saw a fountain over in a shopping mall that I have always wanted to stop and take pictures at. So last week while taking Cassie to a play date, we stopped and she was my model. The funny thing was, the fountain didn't work. You could see cars and building so it "ruined" the picture. We went to leave and I saw all these wild flowers growing right next to the fountain, so I started play and came up with some fun shots that I will be posting for the next week or so. In the shot above, Cassie doesn't have the best expression on her face (that is a "get serious mom" look), but I really liked how the sun was at her back. I used a little flash to fill in any shadows on her face.

I've really enjoyed watching this little shoot of a branch change colors along with the big trees in the neighborhood. It's all lonesome and small sticking out from under that metal fence and looks so out of place. I've had my eye on it and knew I wanted to get a picture before it died altogether. I boosted the colors in photoshope and ran an unsharp mask.

These pictures were taken at a Museum in Auburn. Everything was rustic and worn, I wanted to capture the vintage feel of these items. Love shooting objects that don't move! makes the whole process much easier :-)

I am so tired this morning ... last night Daisy got sprayed by a skunk at 11:30 p.m. OH man that was not fun. Anyway, I will be posting pitures of Cassie that I just took. I'll explain where I took them another day when I can think clearly. No settings today Heather ... sorry.

From last month... Too bad they don't put the ball on the 50 cuz that would have looked really cool. I'm including the 2nd one Heather, cuz if you look over the head of the ref in the center of the field, you can see Lance and Brendan sitting in the stands :)

Assignment: Field Trip! Lance wanted to go to his favorite restaurant for his birthday and suggested I take my camera in search of photo opportunities while we were out of town. We had no plans, just drive, stop, snap. We stopped at this quaint Church to admire the stained glass windows. With the bright sun, I used my polarizing filter to deflect the sun's glare in the windows and to deepen the blue and green hughes. I will have to assign Lance the credit for the cabbage flower shot, he has a good eye, the colors and curves are really interesting.

I saw this as we were going home from my conference. To the right of the hydrant is a guy working on it. He just didn't blend into the picture, so I cropped him out to get this neat shot of the water coming out. This picture was also taken as a portrait, but when I cropped the man out, I made it a landscape.

One of my biggest pleasures from Monday shopping day... a full fruit bowl. I was going to use the healing brush in Photoshop and brush out all those bruises and spots but Photoshop was being kind of wonky tonight and I've got to get to bed... I start work tomorrow!! (well it will be today when you read this :) Have a wonderful day!

Heather # 10

Assignment: Candid Shots. These are harder than they seem, when people are aware there is a camera near, they immediately loose that natural demeanor. I was able to capture this moment as Lance interacted with the other parents at Maddie's soccer game.

Heidi #10 (just for you Cyndi ;)!)

I just thought this was an interesting statue. I added a little extra color to make him pop. :-)

I got this ready last night so I could post this morning before church and just ran out of time. Oh well.

Took this the same day I took the feet pics of the girls. I lightened it just a smidge but the colors and straight out of the camera. It only lasted about 15 minutes but it was beautiful. I realize the tree in the center breaks the rules of photography but I love how it breaks up the sky and makes it so real.

Assignment: Mid Day Sun
So you're always hearing about not taking pictures in mid day sun, but there are some subjects that benefit from such elements, such as abstracts and architecture with an emphasis on the sky. This is a simple close up of a plant with the exposure metered from the blue sky. I applying a soft focus effect and boosted the color a tiny bit. I took shots from different vantage points and found that shooting from the ground and capturing the sky was most appealing.
Below are two more with more of an artistic take:

While waiting at church one Saturday, I decided to take some pictures. Cassie was "helping" me as I was looking for fun shots of fall. Cassie picked up this leaf and said, "Mommy, this will make a good picture. It has a water drop too!". She was right! I played around in Lightroom with presets and came up with this. :)

Can you believe we're already at #9??

This was fun. It didn't quite turn out how I thought it would but I still like it. I had an idea and got the girls to come and play with me. The lighting conditions weren't real great though. The sun was behind me and low enough that it was casting very sharp shadows. Need to try again when the sun is directly overhead. I played with the colors a little and then ran an action that you gave me, Heidi. From Totally Rad Actions... this one is called Troy. It mainly desaturated it and added a little noise. It looks 70's-ish to me. Oh shoot! I forgot about camera settings again! I'll try to remember!

Assignment #3: Indoors, low light with movement. Three extremely difficult ingredients and here are the results.
Brendan is in a band named Freedom Affair and they're actually really good! We converted our detatched garage into a music room, so I guess you could say they are a full fledged garage band :)
Here's how I dealt with the low light: I used my triopod, increased the ISO, and added flash for fill light.

For the image below, I lowered the shutter speed to blur the motion...

This one is just for fun... I like the look on the guitarist's face

I took this picture in front of a strangers house. We were visiting a friend and the setting begged me to take a picture in front of the gate and stone. ;) I played around in lightroom to get the coloring for the picture. I noticed that blogspot cut off the right side of the picture. She was supposed to be in the thirds rule, but it has been cut off. Oh well ...

I'm pulling from my stash today. I took pictures this weekend but they're still in the camera. This was from last month. I have the advantage of being on the sideline during the games and when Spencer turned toward me and I tried to take the pic fast enough before he got too close. I use the long lens for games so close ups end up being really close up. I've already scrapped this pic and when I did, I processed it somehow that made it look really cool. I can't remember what I did though. I tried playing with it tonight. Maybe I'll find the other one and post it too.

Assignment #2: Sports Photography in Overcast Weather.
I was able to capture some very expressive action shots of the kids playing soccer this week. I found myself adjusting the exposure levels because the light kept changing as the sun would filter through the clouds. I tried to maintain the highest shutter speed with an ISO no greater than 200 to avoid noise. I set up my tripod and clicked away. It was quite a bit of work, but a very good learning experience.

I loved the look of this church door. A rustic door in the middle of modern society. I played around with the settings. I am not totally thrilled with how it turned out. I wanted a "Heather look" ... :-) Oh well. That is why this is a learning experience. Have a wonderful weekend!

So are you like me?? I get an idea for a picture and then end up taking about a hundred to get the great shot. But then I have to weed through them all and most of them end up looking the same anyway. My intent was to get some shots like the first two with the sun shining through and around the flag. My dad gave me a crossgrain filter that makes lights kind of look star-ry (??) I took a couple like the last one just at the end and I think I like it better than the others.
Anyway, I was feeling a little weary after the Tuesday elections and needed to be reminded that God is in control and that I really do love our country no matter who our leaders are. I guess I'm a sucker for a patriotic scene.
And just to clarify... Heidi says she leaves her pics on her memory card so she can look on her camera for her settings. The program I'm using deletes them after I upload them to my computer whether I want it to or not. Heather, what do you do?? I know these are at ISO 200 and f/5.6 I was in aperature mode so the shutter speed changed depending on what I was focusing on. I need to figure something out there.
Have a beautiful day, Ladies!!

Heather # 6 Cloudy Day Assignment #1

I am going to start giving myself assignments that will improve my understanding and application of exposure levels in different light situations. I took advantage of the rainy weather and captured the intense color and detail of this rose with the help of an overcast sky shedding soft filtered light. I added a very slight contrast punch to darken the background, but other than that, i think this rose is perfectly exposed and the color is very true to it's natural state. I fired my flash with -2/3 flash comp. on the first image, the result being a tad bit brighter and warmer than the 2nd image.

Heather you comment about candles got me thinking about taking some pictures, so this is what I came up with. :) Definatly used a tripod to keep the shot from getting blurry. Not sure I totally love it, but it is a start.

I had this great idea to shoot the girls in the rain but I had about 15 minutes to try it and it just wasn't working. I think I need to read up on rain shots :) Anyway, I liked this one of Rae spinning the umbrella behind her and the effect it gave.

I have set some goals for myself as an aspiring photographer, and one of them was to come up with a good self portrait. I have read in several photography forums that this is a great exercise in learning. It was! I took the time to try out different poses, play with composition, and to adjust the exposure levels without inconveniencing someone else.
I set up a white sheet behind me ,sat in front of a large window for natural lighting- no flash needed. Due to the slow shutter speed a tripod was absolutely essential. In lightroom I desaturated the color just a bit to make it more moody and increased the exposure level a bit for a creative edge.

I took this picture while at Cassie's softball game. The sun was setting and there was a field in back of us, so I had Brianna be my model. I saw Suzette Allen do a similar picture and I was trying to copy her idea. I really like the warmth the sun gives at sunset. I had my ISO high due to taking softball pictures. Normally, I would try to keep it at 100.

Okay, I really don't want to post after Heather's pics from yesterday. Those were amazing!

But here goes:

My brother brought over his 7 day old daughter yesterday and yes... I took 164 pictures of her :) She got kind of upset with me at one point cuz I was putting her in different positions and she didn't like it. But I got a couple cute ones. I love the bottom one of her sticking out her tongue. She was dressed for Halloween and doesn't look very girlie so I think I might have him come again with a big bow or flower ribbon on her head. She sooooo sweet! Both of these were in front of my big slider in the family room. I had taken some in the kitchen and the lights made her look so yellow. I was trying to use only natural lighting. Maybe I should designate a room just for pics :) TFL!
